"PReSch" - "Prevention of arithmetic difficulties"

Already in the first years of life, children playfully develop mathematical skills, e.g. B. safe counting and the beginning understanding of quantities and quantity breakdowns. Not every child grows up in an environment that consistently encourages preschool learning of basic math skills. “A scientific study from 2011 shows that every fifth child of primary school age lacks basic mathematical knowledge. These children are often unable to follow lessons in the first grades of elementary school and sometimes develop math problems later on. PReSch identifies and supports children with a lack of basic mathematical knowledge in the transition from daycare to primary school and works before arithmetic weaknesses occur." PReSch has been carried out at the Rainbow School since 2015 and is firmly anchored in everyday school life. 4 colleagues have successfully completed the training for PReSch support and diagnose (as part of the initial diagnostics) and support pupils in the 1st year of school attendance in small groups.

Since 2018/19, parent training (ReEL) has also been offered in the afternoon.

ReEL: Practicing math – but how????

Some children have difficulty learning arithmetic and need parental support at home.

The school counseling centers in the districts of Bielefeld, Gütersloh and Herford have the project Reel (Arithmetic support for children with arithmetic weaknesses with parents and teachers). This is a parent-child training. The goals of the training are to build up basic mathematical skills, learn suitable calculation strategies and consolidate what you have learned through regular home exercises.

At our school we offer the training for parents with children in the 2nd and 3rd year of school attendance. The parents come to school with their child on 8 afternoons (approx. every 4 weeks). There, exercises are learned in a small group and practiced together with the child under supervision. These exercises should then be carried out with the child at home to help them learn arithmetic and to overcome the difficulties.
